PORT TOWNSEND — Today’s 26th anniversary party for the Port Townsend Main Street Program will be an occasion to recognize community members and get out the word about the town’s opportunity to win a $25,000 historical preservation grant.
The Port Townsend Main Street Program’s annual membership party will be from
5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St.
Business Partner and volunteer awards will be announced, and the 2011 board of directors will be introduced.
The event sponsored by Puget Sound Energy features appetizers, beverages and dessert.
A $10 donation is requested.
“Our annual get-together helps set the tone for the summer,” said Main Street Executive Director Mari Mullen.
“It’s an opportunity to catch up on news, honor the exemplary work of community members and celebrate what’s special about our town.”
Main Street also is getting out the word about an online contest that could net Port Townsend, if it wins first place out of 100 entries nationwide, a $25,000 grant to be used for preservation and economic development projects in the historic district.
While the money would go to a variety of Main Street projects, the Hastings Building, 120 Taylor St., symbolizes the local effort in the “This Place Matters” contest, sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Each supporter can vote only once this month at either www.porttownsendmatters.com or www.ptmainstreet.org.
Each voter also will be entered into a drawing to possibly win what Main Street describes as “an epic night on the town in PT.”
The contest — sponsored by the Fireman’s Fund and National Trust Insurance Services, which is part of the National Trust — began Wednesday and closes June 30.
Port Townsend’s competition ranges from such small towns as Tumwater and such large cities as Chicago and Cleveland, Ohio.
New Main Street Program officers are Heather Dudley Nollette of Hastings Estate Co., president; Dominic Svornich of Kitsap Bank, vice president; Susan Windle of Forest Gems, secretary; and Phil Christoffersen of Joglo Northwest LLC, treasurer.
Other board members are Mari Friend, Sport Townsend; Mark Cole, The Upstage restaurant; Sarah Bowman, Walkable and Livable Communities Institute; and Tim Caldwell, Puget Sound Energy.
