PORT TOWNSEND — A Port Townsend man was airlifted to a Seattle hospital after the pickup he was driving crashed into a ditch and rolled Monday afternoon on state Highway 20 at Discovery Bay.

Jay A. Headley, 39, was hurt in a 3:39 p.m. single-car wreck on the highway near its intersection with Fairmount Road about 10 miles southwest of Port Townsend.

A passenger in the car, Donald E. Patten, 49, also of Port Townsend, was not injured, the State Patrol said.

On Tuesday, no record could be found of Headley’s circumstances.

He was not listed among the patients at Harborview Medical Center on Tuesday.

He also was not listed at the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

It is likely he was ether discharged or transferred, but the hospital provides no information about former patients.

The State Patrol will request that charges of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol be filed against Headley, said Trooper Krista Hedstrom, spokeswoman for the agency.

The State Patrol said Headley was driving east on state Highway 20 when his 1996 Toyota pickup left the roadway to the right, hit a ditch and rolled, coming to rest upside-down in the ditch.

Drugs or alcohol were a factor in the wreck, Hedstrom said.

A blood sample was taken from Headley and sent to the state lab for analysis, she said.

The State Patrol will request that the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office file charges against Headley after the test results are received, probably in about a month, Hedstrom said.
