PORT TOWNSEND — Residents don’t want their poplar trees along Sims Way cut down to make way for more ferry traffic lanes.
Mayor George Masci doesn’t either.
The mayor said he plans to write a strongly worded letter to the state Department of Transportation opposing a proposal to cut down the poplar trees to provide for construction of temporary ferry holding lanes.
“I want to protest the absurd and short-sighted concept and urge the state to hold a public forum for citing a two-month parking facility with the citizens’ acquiescence,” Masci said.
The lanes would be constructed in 2006 because Transportation plans to bring two jumbo ferries into Port Townsend during the eight-week closure of the Hood Canal Bridge.
