PORT TOWNSEND — The city of Port Townsend has been honored as the nation’s newest Preserve America community, a status that might boost the city’s chances of landing federal grants for historic and heritage projects, such as City Hall and the Northwest Maritime Center.
The designation was confirmed this month in a letter from first lady Laura Bush.
“It gives us extra points in other grant opportunities,” City Manager David Timmons said.
“It could be used to finish our City Hall or retrofitting for the police station as a tourism center.”
The Jefferson County Historical Society is finishing work on the historic half of City Hall, which is 117 years old.
City leaders also are considering relocating the Port Townsend Police Department’s offices, which are now located in a cramped, old structure on Water Street across from City Hall.
Funds to restore the downtown Quincy Street dock, the city’s former ferry terminal, also could be secured through the program to enhance moorage for future cruise vessel visits to the city’s historic downtown, Timmons said.
City named a port of call
Seattle-based Cruise West has named Port Townsend a port of call for its Spirit of Endeavor, the result of the city’s historic downtown walking tours, quaintness and pedestrian friendliness.
The white 217-foot-long, 102-passenger cruise vessel will be tying up at City Dock downtown for three Fridays, beginning April 14.
Tourism in general could benefit from the designation.
“We can also use the grant dollars to supplement our tourism marketing and promotion,” Timmons said.
In her letter to former Mayor Catharine Robinson, Bush states:
“Preserve America communities demonstrate that they are committed to preserving America’s heritage while ensuring a future filled with opportunities for learning and enjoyment.
“This community designation program, combined with the Preserve America Presidential Awards and federal support, provides strong incentives for continued preservation of our cultural and natural heritage resources.
“I commend the city of Port Townsend and its leaders for their commitment to preserving an important part of our nation’s historic past for visitors, neighbors and, most importantly, for children.”
The first lady is honorary chair of Preserve America.
