PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwest Maritime Center and Wooden Boat Foundation has selected an executive director to guide the organization into a new era of maritime education with increased emphasis on year-round programs.
Stanley Cummings, former director of the Ocean Institute in Southern California, will come on board in January as head of the nonprofit foundation.
Dave Robison, the current director will stay on as project manager.
The organization will break ground in December for a new $12.2 million, 27,000-square-foot regional waterfront center.
Robison said the time is right to bring on a maritime educator with expertise in maritime programs, education, management and fundraising.
“Stan has a strong record in all four areas. He’s a proven leader who has developed highly successful, sustainable maritime education programs. He’s the right person for this new phase in Port Townsend’s maritime history,” said Robison.
The maritime center, to be built at the end of Water Street at Hudson Point, will showcase the historic seaport’s marine trades, and let residents and visitors experience the region’s rich maritime heritage, including the annual Wooden Boat Festival.
