PORT TOWNSEND — Local maritime heritage programs got a boost this week with the city giving environmental approval to plans for a new pier on the former Thomas Oil site.
The new pier and dock will be part of the planned expansion of Northwest Maritime Center and will provide a hub for on-the-water programs offered by the Wooden Boat Foundation, the center’s anchor tenant.
The city’s environmental review of the project was completed Tuesday.
The project is envisioned as a waterfront gateway to Port Townsend, allowing visitors to reach town the way people did back when the city was first founded — by boat.
