PORT TOWNSEND — Fire jugglers and musicians will march along Water Street’s sidewalks just before midnight tonight in a bid to help residents ring in the New Year.
“There’s nothing else to do,” said Kelly Force, a founding member of the People’s Republic of Port Townsend Marching Band.
“It’s something for families to do.”
Force said there are few alternatives for those who want to enjoy the evening but don’t want to go into bars and restaurants — or stay home.
Tonight’s festivities are free and open to everybody, Force said.
Penney Hubbard, an administrator at the Port Townsend Visitor Information Center, said New Year’s Eve is traditionally low key in Port Townsend, and many people either stay home or go to local restaurants.
Candles at labyrinth
A free candle-lighting ceremony will take place at the labyrinth at H.J. Carroll Park in Chimacum, and a Quaker, Gary Novak, has coordinated a peace vigil for downtown Port Townsend.
