PORT TOWNSEND — When a second ferry goes into service on the Port Townsend-Keystone run Sunday, hungry riders will have two choices — eat before boarding or taking a pocket full of change to buy food from vending machines.
And that situation probably won’t change in the near future, says Brian Volkert, business development manager for Washington State Ferries.
“Discussions are going to move forward, but nothing is in place to put food in place,” Volkert said Thursday.
But Port Townsend-Keystone ferry riders shouldn’t feel slighted, because none of the state’s ferries is currently serving food and might not be for a while.
“None of them are close to going,” Volkert said of planned food service on the major ferry routes.
The goal, according to a Ferries spokeswoman, is to have food service in-place by June 1.
Food service on the ferries ended Dec. 31 when Sodexho USA severed its state contract on all ferries, saying the business was no longer profitable.
