PORT TOWNSEND — When the old ferries serving the Port Townsend-Keystone route are retired in 2008, they could be placed on the online auction block.
The two Port Townsend-Keystone ferries will be phased out as part of an improvement plan being drawn up by the state.
The passenger ferry MV Tyee was recently sold on the Internet site eBay to a Florida boat broker for $700,000.
A similar fate isn’t being ruled out for the ferries MV Klickitat and MV Quinault, said Ray Deardorf, planning director for Washington State Ferries.
While Internet auctions are a new way to dispose of the vessels, sale of retired ferries to the highest bidder is an old practice.
