PORT TOWNSEND –Port Townsend Paper Corp. announced Monday that it is going ahead with plans to cut 40 positions at its kraft paper mill.
Six employees were handed termination notices Monday, while 34 decided to seek voluntary layoff and early retirement options offered by the company. They will be gone within the next two weeks.
The move to cut 40 jobs, first aired last month, was characterized by the company as a cost-saving measure. Company officials said the work force reduction would have no effect on production at the mill.
“By keeping our costs in line, we fully expect the company to survive this current challenging time and prosper in the long term,” company President John Begley said.
