PORT TOWNSEND — A local resident says he will present petitions at Monday night’s City Council meeting that are signed by as many as 300 people opposed to the construction of a City Hall annex.
Vern Garrison, a former city councilman, said he will also ask council members to pass a 90-day moratorium on annex planning.
“For a lot of reasons, it’s a bad idea,” Garrison said Wednesday. “I am asking anyone who is concerned about this issue to show up at 6:30 p.m. Monday night. It’s going to be an eventful meeting.”
The meeting will be held at City Hall, 540 Water St.
The petitions cite uncertain economic conditions, budget shortfalls and cost overruns as reasons for opposing the project.
Garrison said he hopes to draw as many as 50 like-minded residents to Monday’s meeting.
On Jan. 13, council members instructed staff to ready plans to build the annex adjacent to City Hall.
