PORT TOWNSEND – Ensuring access to businesses and traffic safety are the major concerns when it comes to planning the future of Upper Sims Way, the city’s main entrance thoroughfare.
So said City Planning Director Rick Sepler, who found himself facing some tense moments Monday before an audience of some 40 business owners.
Sepler, who helped facilitate nearly two years of study and public forums on shaping Upper Sims’ initial traffic design, addressed the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce at Fort Worden State Park Commons.
“This was not an easy decision,” Sepler said of the City Council’s 4-3 vote June 18 for roundabouts at Howard and Thomas streets instead of traffic lights.
Traffic lights are preferred by many Upper Sims business owners.
Sepler told the luncheon audience that both roundabouts and traffic lights are options that would work on Upper Sims.
