PORT TOWNSEND — More than 20 abandoned bicycles and small motorcycles are waiting to be claimed at the Port Townsend Police Department.

They all share one thing in common — someone in Port Townsend is probably missing them.

“Occasionally, someone reports a stolen bicycle, and it is matched with a bike officers have picked up somewhere in town,” said Officer Luke Bogues.

Usually, the bicycles remain unclaimed, and after 60 days, they are donated to charity, Bogues said.

There are about 20 bicycles and several small motorcycles at the police department, waiting to be claimed by their owners, he said.

Bogues said that some of the bicycles are new and expensive, while others are rusted or old.

People who have had a bicycle go missing can go to the police department at Mountain View Commons, 1925 Blaine St., during business hours to report a missing bicycle or to identify a found bicycle.

To claim a bike, knowing the serial number of the bicycle is ideal, but a description, including the make, model and color of the bicycle is acceptable, Bogues said.

The Port Townsend Police Department offers bicycle licensing for $5 to help identify property and return bicycles to their owners.
