PORT TOWNSEND — An officer was injured Friday night during a scuffle with an intoxicated assault suspect, police said today.

The incident unfolded shortly after 7:30 p.m. when officers were dispatched to a report of a woman screaming during an altercation with a man in the 1800 block of Water Street.

When police arrived, they found the man, a 36-year-old intoxicated transient, with a 44-year-old Port Townsend woman.

The man, who had an active arrest warrant for assault, ran from police as they arrived. Two officers pursued him on foot, while a third officer stayed with the woman for her safety.

The officers caught up with the man behind the state liquor store at 2005 E. Sims Way. The suspect resisted arrest, and one of the officers, Bill Corrigan, lost his footing and broke his ankle during the scuffle.

The second officer was able to take the suspect into custody.

The injured officer was treated at Jefferson General Hospital and released. The suspect was arrested for investigation of obstructing a police officer and on the outstanding assault warrant.
