Port Townsend police still mum on mystery crime

PORT TOWNSEND — An investigation into a mystery crime scene on Rosecrans Street remained open-ended Monday, and authorities are still withholding details, Port Townsend Police Sgt. Ed Green said.

“Evidence was taken from the crime scene, which is a plus,” Green said of the location at 909 Rosecrans, where city police and Washington State Patrol investigators have been combing and sampling for clues.

“We’re still trying to establish what happened at the trailer,” he said.

The travel trailer was removed from the scene Saturday and impounded for further investigation.

Nothing will be known or announced, Green said, until results come back from the State Patrol’s crime lab.

Green declined to confirm if homicide is being investigated. The scene involves a trailer and surrounding area, which are roped off from the public.

After two King County Search and Rescue dogs sniffed the area for evidence Saturday, the trailer was moved to a secured area at the Kuhn Street sewage treatment plant, Green said.

The investigation began last Wednesday.

The trailer had been recently purchased in Port Hadlock and the new owner is not considered a person of interest, Green said.

Statements corroborated

The investigation began in response to statements from a couple of Port Townsend residents, according to Green. Police corroborated the statements, which led them to investigate the grounds.

The State Patrol crime lab has more sophisticated tools to collect evidence, Green said, which is why city police called in state investigators.

More information could be released today, he said.
