PORT TOWNSEND: POOL PROJECT COULD COST LESS THAN $200,000

PORT TOWNSEND — Relatively inexpensive improvements to the Mountain View Elementary School pool will cost less than $200,000.

But the bill soars past $1 million if renovations include a new pool layout.

A study released Thursday by consultant Orb Organization of Renton estimated that renovation would cost $167,714, including equipment for the handicapped and new lighting.

An additional $355,113 will be required for maintenance to extend the pool’s life to 30 years.

But the cost leaps to $1.4 million if the renovation includes a new interior layout featuring a 75-foot by 28-foot lap pool and a 24-foot by 56-foot family pool.

The existing L-shaped pool is 60 feet by 28 feet in the east-west lanes and 56 feet by 28 feet in the north-south lanes.

The study estimates a new 75 foot by 44 foot competition pool — with one-meter and three-meter diving boards and the family pool — would cost $3,862,022.
