PORT TOWNSEND — Port of Port Townsend commissioners formally decided Wednesday that no development of any kind will be allowed at Kah Tai Lagoon Park for the time being.
Commissioners voted 3-0 to prevent the planting of approximately 500 seedlings by the Friends of Kah Tai.
The group began planting the trees late last year before Port Executive Director Larry Crockett stopped them.
Port commissioners supported Crockett’s recommendation that the Port needs to complete its comprehensive “scheme” update before allowing changes to the property.
Port commissioners anticipate their efforts to expand the Boat Haven marina will require mitigation of environmental impacts elsewhere.
“We want to preserve that area for mitigation,” said Commission President Conrad Pirner. “We all agree that it will always be a park in Kah Tai, but for the time being, there will be no development.
“If somebody wants to make us an offer, they can buy it.”
