PORT TOWNSEND — The School Board is faced with cutting 5.5 full-time- equivalent teaching positions to help balance an anticipated $416,000 deficit next school year.
The proposed cut, affecting more than six teachers in the Port Townsend School District, would save $387,000, said Steve McIntire, district business manager.
The board is expected define specific positions and to take action on the proposed personnel cuts during its May 9 meeting, McIntire said.
By state law, the district is required to notify targeted teachers by May 15, and targeted classified staff by June 15.
If the plan is approved by the board, the district would lose its certified school librarian that works part time between Blue Heron Middle School and Mountain View Elementary.
The district’s library assistants will remain working in school libraries.
The Blue Heron teaching staff would also be cut by a proposed 2.3 full-time-equivalent positions, which could mean two full-timers and several part-timers.
