PORT TOWNSEND — Hundreds of kayakers will converge on the city today for the 19th annual West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium at Fort Worden State Park.
Sponsored by the Trade Association of Paddlesports, the symposium is billed as the oldest and largest event of its kind in the world.
“If you’re curious about the sport, this is the best place to start,” Registration Coordinator Julie Pierce said Thursday. “It’s the place to get your feet wet.”
The symposium covers all aspects of canoeing and kayaking, and attracts people from all over the country, Pierce said.
Instructors will be on hand to teach kayak techniques from beginning through advanced, Pierce said.
This year, 500 people have registered for the three-day symposium, she said, with close to 2,000 people expected to attend at least one day.
