Port Townsend: “Smart-growth” candidates leading in City Council returns

PORT TOWNSEND — All four “smart-growth” City Council candidates were leading their opponents in Tuesday races.

The absentee ballots showed Kees Kolff and Catharine Robinson leading opponents Lyn Hersey and Barbara McColgan Pastore 60 percent to 40 percent each. Freida Fenn had a comfortable lead — 54 percent to 46 percent — over incumbent Sydney Lipton.

Kolff led Hersey 1,503 to 997 with eight of the 12 Port Townsend precincts tabulated plus the absentee votes. Robinson led 1,414 to 918 over Pastore, and Fenn enjoyed a 1,369 to 1,173 vote lead over Lipton.

Michelle Sandoval enjoyed a commanding lead over challenger Leola Armstrong, though Armstrong garnered 25 percent.

Robinson refuted any assertion that the four candidates constituted a slate, even though all four attended Fenn’s victory party at The Chapel at Fort Worden State Park as returns came in.

“I think people are intelligent to chose what they want,” she said. “They didn’t check one box and get four people. I think the fact that Freida’s and Syd’s contest are so close show that.”
