PORT TOWNSEND — The City Council voted Monday night to regularly recite the Pledge of Allegiance at nearly all the meetings it holds.
The council voted 6-0 to recite the Pledge at all its regular business and special business meetings, workshops and committee meetings.
The move came after Port Townsend Mayor Kees Kolff drew criticism from two council members and local veterans groups for omitting the flag salute from the start of some City Council meetings, including last week’s session, where Kolff read poetry aloud instead.
About 25 people, including local veterans, showed up at City Hall on Monday night. Several criticized Kolff.
Kolff apologized, saying he didn’t realize that he was supposed to lead the Pledge at special business meetings.
