Port Townsend: Two Jefferson Transit workers to drive buses for 2002 Winter Olympics

PORT TOWNSEND — Two Jefferson Transit bus drivers who are used to long stops and sparse passengers will get a whole new experience driving buses next month during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Carla Meyer and Paul Hausmann were selected from among thousands of applicants to transport people around the bustling Utah capital for three weeks.

They went through rigorous background checks, some of which only recently concluded.

Meyer and Hausmann suspect bus drivers from larger cities decided not to participate following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“The two of us think a lot of drivers canceled and I’m a little apprehensive,” Meyer said. “As a single mom, I had to think twice.

“But I have a greater chance of getting killed driving in from Port Hadlock than from terrorists at Salt Lake City.”
