PORT TOWNSEND — Fifty years ago, novice film director George Englund and young screenwriter Stewart Stern decided to make a movie that exposed the shortsightedness of American foreign policy after World War II and foreshadowed America’s doomed military action in Southeast Asia.
“It was very much before its time,” said Stern, who now lives in Seattle.
That two-hour movie, “The Ugly American,” will be shown at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Rose Theatre as a fund-raiser for the Port Townsend Film Festival, which is scheduled for Sept. 26-28.
Both Englund and Stern will be in Port Townsend for the show.
All the seats for the show are sold out, and there’s a waiting list.
