PORT TOWNSEND — Union officials representing Port Townsend Paper Corp. employees who were offered early retirement incentive packages say they are reviewing the proposal.
“Everybody is weighing their options and looking to see if would benefit them,” said Jim Little, president of Paper Allied Industrial Chemical Energy Workers International Union Local No. 8-0175.
“There are still a lot of questions.”
More than 60 workers were offered early retirement packages by Port Townsend Paper Corp. earlier this week to cut company costs, President John Begley said. Wages will be frozen for other employees.
Port Townsend kraft paper mill employees older than 55 offered early retirement have until April 3 to make a decision.
The package will credit workers with three years of additional service on top of existing retirement packages.
Little said he isn’t sure how much financial incentive the packages offer workers.
“I’ve talked to a couple of people, and some are not really sure it would help them,” he said.
