JOYCE — Post-earthquake survival tips will be offered at a fair in Joyce on Saturday.
The annual Joyce Emergency Planning and Preparedness (JEPP) update will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Crescent Grange, 50870 state Highway 112.
Members will be on hand to share ideas about emergency supplies and how to camp in your home. The event will include a community barbecue.
“This will be the third time that we’ve done this to bring the community up to speed on what we’ve done in the last year,” said Jim Buck of Joyce Emergency Planning and Prep.
“We would welcome people from Port Angeles and Sequim and Forks, because we’re all facing the same problem.”
Emergency management officials say you should be prepared to shelter for at least 30 days after the predicted 9.0 magnitude Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and tsunami.
The earthquake likely will divide Clallam County into 20 micro-islands as bridges collapse and culverts fail, Buck said.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) predicts that the Cascadia earthquake will isolate Clallam County from the rest of the world for several weeks.
Consequently, Buck and others recommend having at least 30 days of food, water, medicine, sanitation, fuel and other materials you might need.
Joyce Emergency Planning and Prep was formed to advise the Joyce Fire Department Auxiliary and Clallam County Fire District No. 4 on how to create and maintain a cache of food and materials that will be used to provide shelter for people after a disaster, Buck said.
Last month, JEPP received honorable mention in FEMA’s nationwide Individual and Community Preparedness (ICP) awards contest for its efforts to prepare for the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake.
