PORT ANGELES — Dancing, food, good cheer and a bounty of gifts overflowed the Lower Elwha Klallam tribal center during its annual potlatch with school teachers and administrators.
Thursday’s potlatch — which drew about 400 people from tribe and the Port Angeles and Crescent school districts — was started a dozen years ago to bring together the two cultures of the tribe and the public schools that the tribe’s children attend.
“This is always a good experience,” said Cindy Kelly, Port Angeles School Board president, who joined in the dancing.
“I think this has been very successful in educating the community on the culture of the tribe.
“It is a great time to share about education and celebrate the cultures.”
