PORT ANGELES — Correct spellings of “precious” and “description” won Port Angeles’ recent spelling bees.
Students from Port Angeles School District elementary and middle schools — Franklin, Jefferson, Dry Creek, Hamilton and Roosevelt elementary schools; Stevens Middle School; and the Parents As Partners program — and Queen of Angels and Olympic Christian private schools participated in the citywide bee last week at the Vern Burton Community Center.
The annual bee, sponsored by Soroptimist International of Port Angeles-Jet Set and Friends of the North Olympic Library System, included two bees last Tuesday.
In the first, students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades competed. The second was a contest among seventh- and eighth-grade students.
Winning words
Korin Urtezuela, a Hamilton Elementary sixth-grader, placed first in the elementary-level bee by spelling the word “precious” correctly.
Mary Shore, also a sixth-grade student at Hamilton Elementary, placed second.
At the middle level, Mason Coppage, an eighth-grade student from Stevens, finished first by spelling “description” correctly.
Sydney Realph-Wu, a Queen of Angels eighth-grade student, placed second.
Each of the top two winners in both divisions received a trophy and bookbags filled with prizes donated by the Friends of the North Olympic Library System.
Each finalist participated in “spell downs” in their respective class bees and advanced to the annual all-city bee.
