Property tax payments due Tuesday on Peninsula

Property taxes for the first half of 2013 are due Tuesday.

Payments on the North Olympic Peninsula can be submitted by mail, placed into drop-boxes, paid online or dropped off in person at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St. in Port Angeles, or at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.

The offices are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

In Jefferson County, drop-boxes are in the rear parking lot of the courthouse, at the Bank of America branches in Port Townsend and Port Hadlock, Columbia Bank in Port Ludlow and U.S. Bank in Quilcene.

In Clallam County, a drop-box is at the courthouse in the drive-through in front of the Fourth Street entrance.

Forks and Sequim no longer have drop-off locations because of budget cuts, said county Treasurer Selinda Barkhuis.

The second half of the year’s property tax bill is due by Oct. 31.

Payments can be mailed to the Clallam County Treasurer, 223 E. Fourth St., Suite 3, Port Angeles, WA 98362; or the Jefferson County Treasurer, P.O. Box 571, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Mailed payments must be postmarked by Tuesday.

Payments mailed after the post office pickup time may result in a postmark of May 1 and will be considered delinquent.

Delinquent payments will be subject to a 1 percent interest charge. On June 1, an additional 1 percent interest and a 3 percent penalty will be charged.

Treasurer’s offices accept most credit and debit cards, either in person or online at www.clallam.net/treasurer or www.co.jefferson.wa.us/treasurer.

Electronic checks also are available on the treasurer’s websites.

A convenience fee will be charged by the credit card provider.

Credit card payments for property in Jefferson County also may be made by phone at 877-812-8072.

Those who signed up by April 10 can use an auto-pay service in Jefferson County. The next deadline to register for it is Oct. 10.

Information is available on the Jefferson County treasurer’s website.

For more information on property taxes or assessments, phone 360-417-2344 in Clallam County or 360-385-9150 in Jefferson County.
