PORT TOWNSEND — Washington State Ferries officials assured skeptics in the room Wednesday that the new, free Port Townsend-Keystone vehicle ferry reservations system would work well this summer.
“We’ll do what we can to make it work,” said Susan Harris, state ferries system spokeswoman, who explained the system and its reservations Web site during a training session attended by about 30 business owners and residents at Fort Worden State Park Commons.
“It’s not a perfect solution, but we know it will help.”
Harris added that the reservations system would be fine-tuned “to make it better.”
The system requires motorcycle riders to make reservations, which is a major change.
Also, drivers of vehicles of 6,000 pounds or more, such as Humvees, must phone the state ferries system for a reservation to get on the boat.
The vehicle gross weight limit on the Steilacoom II is 80,000 pounds.
