PORT TOWNSEND — In the fictitious Washington county of Maradona, a heinous crime has occurred.
Or was it a tragic accident?
The state files charges of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment against Taylor Garrison, a gifted soccer player accused of shattering the knee — and future soccer dreams — of an opposing team’s star player.
The trial is carried out twice, once in Jefferson County’s Superior Court and simultaneously in District Court.
Both trials are prosecuted and defended by people who haven’t passed the state bar exam.
In fact, none of them has graduated from high school.
This is the setting for the 2003 YMCA Mock Trial Competition, a statewide event in which the best high school mock trial teams will go on to present their case in Olympia.
