POULSBO — A 17-year-old from Port Townsend was hospitalized after six cars collided on state Highway 3 on Thursday.
Ashley N. Carr was taken to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton because of neck and back pain after the 2:49 p.m. wreck about 7 miles north of Poulsbo.
Peninsula drivers
All other drivers, most of whom were from the North Olympic Peninsula and all of whom were traveling alone, were not hurt, the State Patrol said.
They were Sierra D. Swarm, 31, of Port Angeles; Dana M. Rygaard, 57, of Sequim; Virginia H. Huntington, 43, and Wendy M. Edwards, 40, both of Port Townsend; and Laddie V. Cox, 28, of Bremerton.
The highway was blocked in both lanes for 52 minutes, the State Patrol said.
The State Patrol gave this account:
Carr, traveling north, unable to stop for a slow-moving vehicle, hit the rear of the 1993 Ford Tempo driven by Swarm, also traveling north, and came to rest on the southbound shoulder.
Swarm’s car crossed into the southbound lane, where it was struck by Cox’s 2002 Chevrolet box truck, which was traveling south.
The impact pushed Swarm’s Tempo back into the northbound lane, where it collided with the 1988 Toyota pickup driven by Rygaard before it stopped on the center line.
Rygaard’s pickup then hit Edwards’ 1990 Suburu Legacy, which was also traveling north.
During the chain-reaction collision, Huntington’s 1988 Chevrolet S10 pickup came through, traveling north, and hit Rygaard’s pickup.
The wreck destroyed the vehicles driven by Carr, Swarm, Huntington and Rygaard.
Edwards and Cox drove their damaged vehicles away.
Carr’s condition was not available Thursday night.
All drivers were wearing seat belts, the State Patrol said.
