QUILCENE — A plan by the Navy to increase the number of operations in a Hood Canal undersea test range is drawing fire from south Jefferson County business leaders.
The Quilcene-Brinnon Chamber of Commerce voted Wednesday to develop a plan to oppose operations that would close Hood Canal south of the floating bridge to boaters.
The Keyport Naval Undersea Warfare Center proposed the increase in testing operations in September.
Currently the testing is confined to an area around Naval Submarine Base Bangor on the Kitsap Peninsula.
The new range would cover most of the area between the Hood Canal Bridge and Seabeck, and Dabob Bay.
Four public meetings will take place next week to discuss the plan.
The membership of the chamber says it’ll be there.
