Quilcene School District is moving into Step 4 of its reopening plan this week.
The district started the school year fully remote due to Jefferson County being in the state’s moderate-risk category for COVID-19. It is using a five-step plan based on Jefferson County’s risk level as well as the risk level of Clallam and Kitsap counties. The plan ranges from distance learning for all grade levels at Step 1 to in-person instruction four days a week at Step 5.
Step 4 “means that students in grades K-5 will be learning on-campus next Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday and students in grades 6-12 will either be learning Monday & Tuesday if in Group A or Thursday & Friday if in Group B,” said Sean Moss, high school principal, in a district announcement issued Thursday.
Parents were notified by mail what cohort their children fall into, with paraeducators making follow-up phone calls, he said.

Other districts in the county opted to begin the year with hybrid instruction.
Jefferson County is now in a low-risk infection rate category. Clallam County is also now in the low-risk category and school districts are planning to move from remote learning to hybrid systems in early October.
Here are summaries of the plans for each of the other public school districts in Jefferson County

Port Townsend School District offered families full online instruction or a hybrid model of two days of in-person instruction and three days of online instruction, with a limited number of high school students having the hybrid model available, officials said.
