Quilcene: Teen center opens Saturday

QUILCENE — Teen-agers are putting the finishing touches on a new teen center — dubbed “The Shack” — that is set to open Saturday afternoon in Quilcene.

Donations, elbow grease and planning by Quilcene teens, teachers and area residents have transformed what was part of an old service station into a multi-purpose meeting place for teen-agers.

Nearly everything in the center, from the carpet to toilet paper to couches to the paint on the walls was donated, said Becky Anderson, one of the youth center’s board members.

“The community has really rallied for this,” she said.

The idea for a center came together in February from a number of sources — three teenagers who wrote a letter to the Leader, Andy Mackie and Quilcene Middle School teacher Tony Cosby, among others.

The center will be open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. through the summer. It will cater to kids from seventh grade to 12th grade. Adult and teen volunteers will be on hand to run the center.
