Quillayute Valley scholarship auction raises more than $60,000 in Forks

FORKS — The Quillayute Valley scholarship auction raised $60,100 last weekend.

The money will be put into a scholarship fund available to any Forks High School graduate.

The 47th annual auction, held Saturday and Sunday, raised less than in recent years, said Marcia Bingham, scholarship committee member. About $67,000 was raised last year.

But it was nothing for the Chamber of Commerce director to scoff at.

“We are so spoiled,” Bingham said.

“Every year, I’m stunned at the kind of support we get.”

About 900 items were auctioned, netting $54,553, Bingham said. The rest came through cash donations.

A handmade bed frame crafted by Forks resident Reed Callis sold for the most: $2,000.

Four autographed baseballs were donated to the auction.

A baseball signed by the 1962 San Francisco Giants team, including Willie Mays, went for $550. Forks resident Brian Fairbanks donated the autographed ball, Bingham said.

Lori Norvell of Plano, Texas, donated the other three.

A ball signed by Bob Feller went for $57, another signed by Andre Dawson sold for $200, and a third signed by Pete Rose was picked up for $290.

Norvell, a Twilight fan, began donating to the auction last year.

A Native American woven basket made by Muriel Higgins, who annually donates a basket for the auction, went for $400.
