Quinault fete Chief Taholah Days

TAHOLAH — Chief Taholah Days, the Quinault Indian Nation’s biggest celebration of the year, continues today through Tuesday.

Chief Taholah Days commemorates the signing of the Quinault Treaty on July 1, 1855.

It began Saturday and runs through Tuesday.

Taholah Days is an alcohol- and drug-free event (this includes marijuana).

The schedule is:

Today

• 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. — Fun Run/Walk, community center.

 9 a.m. — Softball tourney, tribal office field.

• Noon — Family Fun Day and barbecue, Taholah School field.

• 12:30 p.m. — Watermelon eating contest, Taholah School field.

• 3:30 p.m. — Hypnotist Marianna Matthews, Taholah School gym.

• 8 p.m. — Canoe races, riverfront.

• 9 p.m. — Dance, Heritage Park.

Monday

• 9 a.m. to 11 .a.m. — Fun Run/Walk for diabetes, fitness center.

• 9 a.m. — Volleyball Tourney, tribal office field.

• 11:30 a.m. — Field sports, Taholah School.

• 12:30 p.m. — Honoring of canoe racers, Heritage Park.

• 2 p.m. — Royalty pageant, Heritage Park.

 3:30 p.m. — Horseshoe tourney, Sea Breeze Stadium; cultural contest with singing, dancing and drumming, Heritage Park.

• 4 p.m. — Scavenger Hunt, Heritage Park.

• 7 p.m. — Amateur boxing, community center.

• 8:30 p.m. — Canoe races, riverfront.

 9 p.m. — Dance, Heritage Park.

Tuesday

• Noon — Parade, with lineup at housing office.

• 1:30 p.m. — Talent Show, Heritage Park.

• 3:30 p.m. — Field sports, Taholah School.

• 6 p.m. — Boxing, community center.

• 9 p.m. — Canoe races, riverfront.

• Dusk — Fireworks, riverfront.

Taholah Days also features firework sales, merchandise vendors and food stands serving Indian tacos, Mexican and barbecued foods, curly fries and corn on the cob.

A Quillayute Valley Scholarship Auction one-day record was set on Saturday with $75,000 and an all-time record with auction items and cash donations totaled $218,002.
