Record $198,015 in donations for Home Fund

Thank you!

Thank you!

Because of the generosity and compassion of people and organizations in Jefferson and Clallam counties, a record-breaking $198,015.03 was contributed to the Peninsula Daily News’ Peninsula Home Fund.

Thousands of dollars in last-minute contributions arrived last week.

The final total for the 2008 campaign from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve smashed the old record set on Dec. 31, 2007, of $193,312.11.

A check will be given this week to OlyCAP — Olympic Community Action Programs, the No. 1 emergency care agency on the North Olympic Peninsula — so it can be put to work helping your neighbors immediately.

OlyCAP manages the fund for the PDN, screens the applicants — and provides life-changing services to those who need a “hand up, not a handout.”

And every dollar donated — 100 percent — goes directly to assist those in need in Jefferson and Clallam counties.

All costs are absorbed by Peninsula Daily News and OlyCAP.

‘Generous, caring spirit’

Said Tim Hockett, executive director of OlyCAP:

“When people say that the North Olympic Peninsula is a great place to live, the immediate assumption is that it is because of the natural beauty that surrounds it.

“The reality behind what makes this such a wonderful place is the generous, caring spirit of the people.

“This is reflected in no better way than in the Peninsula Daily News’ Peninsula Home Fund.

“In a year when many are struggling to pay for a tank of gas, the community gave like never before — and set another record.”

As publisher and editor of the Peninsula Daily News, I second Hockett’s statement.

The Home Fund represents an important commitment by the PDN and OlyCAP every year — but perhaps never more so than this year, as the community contends with the fallout from the national economic downturn.

There is no doubt that there will be a significant increase in need in 2009.

In times of hardship, we are reminded of what’s important.

And the Peninsula has stepped forward again.

Readers participate in fund

The PDN gives the Home Fund prominent, full-page coverage twice a week during the fund drive because we know how critical it is for the well-being of our neighbors.

We also think it’s important to show everyone how generous the community can be when there are so many needs to be met.

Perhaps the most encouraging stories we’ve done during the Home Fund drives tell of people who, once they were helped by money from the Home Fund, were then able to use their experience to help others.

Poverty, homelessness, addiction and abuse are problems that just won’t go away.

The truth, however, is that every day, real people in our community are achieving successes against each of those difficulties.

The Peninsula Home Fund not only helps our readers learn about those successes — but participate in making them happen.

Aid to 2,959

The 2007 donations to the Home Fund went a long way — helping 2,959 individuals and families across the Peninsula.

And every penny — and more! — was spent by Dec. 31.

The Home Fund actually spent $205,171 in 2008 because of high demand:

•$193,312 was collected in 2007 from PDN readers.

•$5,259.49 was unspent from the 2006 campaign drive.

•$6,599.51 came from unsolicited funds from donations to OlyCAP for emergency services, which were credited to the Home Fund.

Completing its 19th year, Peninsula Home Fund is a safety net for residents in Jefferson and Clallam counties when they face economic or emotional emergency storms — and can’t find help elsewhere.

From Port Townsend to Forks, from Quilcene and Brinnon to LaPush, the fund is a “hand up, not a handout” when there is nowhere else to turn.

The Peninsula Home Fund is used for hot meals for seniors, warm winter coats for kids, home repairs for the low income, eyeglasses and necessary prescription drugs, dental work, safe, drug-free temporary housing . . . the list goes on and on.

In addition to no money diverted for administration or other overhead, your personal information is kept confidential.

The PDN does not rent, sell, give or otherwise share your address or other information with anyone, or make any other use of it.

To apply for a grant from the fund, phone OlyCAP at 360-452-4726 or 800-360-0666 (Clallam County) or 360-385-2571 (Jefferson County).

•All instances of help are designed to get an individual or family through the crisis — and back on the path to self-sufficiency.

That’s the “hand up, not a handout” focus of the fund.

•Whenever possible, Peninsula Home Fund case managers work with individuals or families to develop a plan to become financially stable — and avoid a recurrence of the emergency that prompted aid from the fund.

•Money is usually distributed in small amounts, usually up to $150.

•Assistance is limited to one time in a 12-month period.

•Peninsula Home Fund contributions are often used in conjunction with money from other agencies, often enabling OlyCAP to stretch the value of a donation.

To apply for a grant from the fund, phone OlyCAP at 360-452-4726 (Clallam County) or 360-385-2571 (Jefferson County).

If you have any questions about the fund, contact John Brewer, Peninsula Daily News editor and publisher, at 360-417-3500.
