Two North Olympic Peninsula Red Cross volunteers are on their way to Louisiana to help with Hurricane Gustav disaster relief.
Gerry Wood of Port Angeles and Judi Edwards of Port Townsend will join about 100 other American Red Cross volunteers, said Phyllis Darling, executive director of the Olympic Peninsula Red Cross.
“We always ask our volunteers to alert us when they are willing to go out on something,” Darling said.
“These two let us know that they would, and their names came up as ones that would be good to go early on.”
The two had left by Tuesday, she said.
Hurricane Gustav made landfall 72 miles southwest of New Orleans at 9:30 a.m. Monday as a Category 2 storm, with maximum wind speed of 110 mph.
It quickly slowed to a Category 1 as it steamed toward Texas, and, on Tuesday afternoon, was a moisture-rich tropical depression headed north from Shreveport, La.
