PORT ANGELES — Registration is open for the last “Mastering the Arts” programs, two public workshops sponsored by the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center on Friday and Sunday.
The nonprofit arts center will bring Bellingham painter and printmaker Sheila Sondik in for “Painting on Crinkled Masa Paper” from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.
In this lecture-demonstration, Sondik will combine Asian and Western painting techniques using sumi ink, watercolor and soaked, crinkled paper.
Participants will have a chance to try the first step in the process: crinkling and painting with diluted Japanese ink.
Then in Sunday’s second offering, Seattle ceramist Carol Gouthro will give a lecture and workshop titled “Exuberant Clay!,” also at the Vern Burton.
In her program from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Gouthro will show images of her work over the past 30 years, demonstrate her building and surfacing methods, and show how she uses wooden drop molds and texture slabs.
The cost for each workshop is $40, or $35 for members of the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, while registration details are available at www.PAFACed.org or by phoning the center at 360-457-3532.
Art lovers also can see Gouthro’s and Sondik’s prints and sculptures in the fine arts center’s show “Exotic Terrane,” on display through Sunday.
Admission is free to the center, where the indoor gallery at 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd. is open from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.
The Webster’s Woods art park surrounding the center is also free. The 5 acres of forest and meadow are open from dawn till dusk 365 days a year.
