PORT ANGELES — Front Street in downtown will be repaved later this month, causing westbound traffic to be rerouted through Railroad Avenue each evening for five straight days.
From July 26 through Aug. 1, the work will occur during the evening and early morning hours. It’s scheduled to finish at 6:30 a.m. Aug. 1.
Front Street will be closed between Lincoln and Oak streets while the work occurs.
The road will be closed daily at 7 p.m. from July 26 through July 30.
It will reopen at 4 a.m. July 27 and 6:30 a.m. each day from July 28 through Aug. 1.
As part of the repaving work, performed by Lakeside Industries, bike lanes will be added.
Flaggers will direct traffic around most of the paving work via Railroad Avenue, said Glenn Cutler, city public works and utilities director.
Cutler said the work is occurring during the evening and early morning hours to lessen the impact on traffic.
Jim Mahlum, the city’s roads project manager, said the road will be drivable in between work hours.
“It will not be any worse than it is currently,” he said.
Cutler said the city does not expect a problem with the truck traffic having to take the right hand turn onto Lincoln Street at the beginning of the detour.
He said the flaggers will assist them if needed.
First Street in downtown will be repaved next year before Memorial Day, Cutler said.
That will coincide with a new storm water collection system that will be installed under that road between Lincoln and Valley streets.
First Street also will get bike lanes then.
Lakeside Industries is being paid about $1.3 million for the work on Front Street and to repave stretches of Lauridsen Boulevard, and L, Race and Fifth streets this summer.
