PORT TOWNSEND — Republican Dennis Schultz went on the attack Monday, saying that Jefferson County’s three Democratic commissioners — including his opponent, Phil Johnson — are failing to deal with a $4.7 million overall budget deficit.
“At this rate we’re going to be penniless in four years,” Schultz warned during a question-and-answer session at a Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce luncheon Monday attended by more than 50.
Schultz said the county commissioners were not even talking about the overall deficit.
Schultz is challenging Johnson for commissioner Position 1 in the Nov. 4 general election.
He is the only Republican in either of the commissioner races.
Incumbent Democrat David Sullivan is challenged by Sandy Hershelman, who is running as an independent for Position 2 on the three-member board.
They squared off at a chamber forum last week.
