PORT ANGELES — Jan Urfer didn’t intend on becoming a gymnastics coach when she first arrived in Port Angeles 36 years ago.
But when a junior high school coach suddenly resigned in 1978, Urfer — a classroom music teacher — decided to give coaching a try.
She hasn’t stopped since.
Urfer, who is now the head gymnastics coach at Port Angeles High School, was inducted into the Washington State High School Gymnastics Coaches Association Hall of Fame during the state meet at the Tacoma Dome in February.
“I was surprised,” she said while sitting in a tiny chair in her classroom at Hamilton Elementary School. “I was definitely excited about it.
“It was really nice to know that people really do appreciate your efforts, especially when it comes from a vote by a group of your peers.”
