PORT TOWNSEND — Vandals threw a rock through the window of a closed restaurant last week but didn’t attempt to break into the building itself, according to police reports.

A window was broken at 923 Washington St., the former site of the Upstage Restaurant and Bistro, on the night of Sept. 16, according to the report that was filed by Dave Peterson, the building’s owner.

The damage is estimated at $200, according to the report.

“The window was broken, apparently something thrown through it, but there was no apparent break-in,” Peterson’s statement said.

The restaurant has been shuttered since early June, when it closed for repairs, which turned out to be more elaborate than expected.

Peterson evicted Upstage owner Mark Cole at the end of July and blamed Cole for the severity of the repairs, which Cole denies.

The matter currently is in litigation between the two parties, with Cole charging Peterson with breach of contract.

Peterson owns the Terry Building, which houses the former Upstage and spaces for two other businesses Peterson evicted with plans to open a restaurant.

Those plans were abandoned when the costs of bringing the building up to code for a restaurant were too high, Peterson has said.

Peterson has not announced plans for the reopening of any of those spaces.

“I’ve got a broken window, and I’m going to fix it,” he said.
