Rodent bomb causes Port Hadlock mobile home fire

PORT HADLOCK — While trying to rid their residence of rodents, Port Hadlock residents set the crawl space of their mobile home on fire.

East Jefferson Fire-Rescue responded about 9 a.m. Monday to the structure fire in the 100 block of Blanche Avenue.

The residents reported using a rodent smoke bomb in an attempt to get rid of some rats from beneath the home, Emily Stewart, EJFR spokesperson, said in a press release.

The bomb ignited the contents of the crawl space, Stewart said.

That type of rodent repellent is not recommended for use in or under a residential structure, Assistant Chief Brian Tracer said.

“Rodent smoke bombs are meant to be used away from homes and other structures — for a rodent-burrowing situation,” Tracer said. “When using any smoke- or heat-related product, you must follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and exercise extreme caution.”

Firefighters removed portions of skirting and extinguished the fire from below the building, Stewart said.

The main structure was not damaged, and the home is still habitable, she said.
