RUN THE PENINSULA: More than 300 take on the Larry Scott Run

Five of top seven athletes in 5K event are 13 or younger

PORT TOWNSEND — More than 330 competitors took to the trails and enjoyed the fall foliage of Port Townsend on full display in the fifth annual Larry Scott Trail Run, the fourth race in the Run the Peninsula Series.

The series is put on by the Port Angeles Marathon Association, which also runs the North Olympic Discovery Marathon in June, the Elwha Bridge Run in February, the Sequim Railroad Bridge Run in April and the Jamestown S’Klallam Glow Run coming up in December.

The event is made possible by title sponsors Peninsula Daily News and the Sequim Gazette and presenting sponsors Jefferson Healthcare and Olympic Medical Center.

Taking first in the half-marathon was Port Townsend City Manager John Mauro, a competitor in the Boston Marathon and a past winner of the NODM and other local races. He won with a time of 1 hour, 20 minutes, 47 seconds, beating the second-place runner by 9 minutes.

The top women’s time was put in by Margaret Shull of Puyallup with a time of 1:38:34.40. She was fifth overall.

In the 10K, Ethan Martin of Sequim took first with a time of 39:01.28, winning by a gap of more than 3½ minutes. The top women’s runner was Dayana Hernandez of Oak Harbor, who took first with a time of 47:13.96. She was also fifth overall.

The top runner in the 5K was 13-year-old Skye Trollsplinter of Port Townsend with a time of 19:23.92. The second-place runner, Nolan Butler, is also 13 years old. Five of the top seven runners were 13 or younger. The top women’s time was Aimee Olbu of Marysville with a time of 23:43.04.

The final 2023 leg of Run the Peninsula will be the Jamestown S’Klallam Glow Run, a nighttime race during which runners wear headlamps along the Olympic Discovery Trail, held Dec. 2 in Blyn. People can register for that race at https://tinyurl.com/SKlallamRun.

There were 80 finishers in the half-marathon, 114 in the 10K and 140 in the 5K.
