PORT ANGELES — His arrival screamed “VIP.”
From the signs, to the fans to the spontaneous applause that greeted him as he stepped into William R. Fairchild International Airport.
A smile filled his mother’s face and tears tinted his father’s eyes.
And on Friday evening, U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Connors, clad in his dress whites at his father’s request, uttered one word as he took it all in:
“Wow!”
The celebration marked his homecoming after a six-month deployment aboard the destroyer USS Higgins in the Persian Gulf as part of the forces fighting the war in Iraq.
