School supply donations accepted for Port Angeles students

PORT ANGELES — Donations will be accepted at “Stuff the Bus” events planned this month to collect school supplies for distribution to needy students in August.

The annual back-to-school event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Jefferson Elementary School, 218 E. 12th St.

Donations will be collected at events Saturday, July 21; Tuesday, July 24; and Saturday, July 28, said Tina Smith-O’Hara, Port Angeles School District spokeswoman.

A yellow bus that can be filled with school supplies will be parked at Fashion Bug near the eastside Safeway store July 21.

KONP 1450 AM Radio will host an all-day telethon July 24, with an invitation to bring donations to the office at 721 E. First St. and help fill the bus with school supplies.

The yellow bus also will be parked at Walmart at 3411 E. Kolonels Way on July 28 to receive donations.

School supplies will be provided free to students in need who are in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Haircuts, immunizations, community services resources and back-to-school information also will be offered.

The SmileMobile program will accept reservations for Sept­ember appointments.

The 2011 Back to School Event drew more than 200 families and served 750 students.

Groups and individuals are collecting donations and school supplies now for the August distribution.

Drop-off locations include First Federal’s Port Angeles branches, Sterling Bank and U.S. Bank.

A long list of agencies are contributing.

They include Lutheran Community Services NW, Serenity House, Port Angeles School District, Pupil Transportation Center, Sodexo Food Services, United Way of Clallam County, Rotary Club of Port Angeles, Kiwanis Olympic and Walmart Vision Center.

Also SmileMobile, Clallam County Health & Human Services, Soroptimist International of Port Angeles-Jet Set, Burt and Ralene Walls, and the Port Angeles Education Foundation.

Also KONP Radio, First Federal, Sterling Savings Bank, U.S. Bank, Columbia Bank, Westport, ACTI, Port Angeles Hardwood, Nippon Paper Industries, Lakeside Industries, Interfor Pacific, Coldwell Banker, Fashion Bug, Port Angeles Farmers Market and WSU Clallam County Extension.
