Second marina revamp coming in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND – While one Port of Port Townsend marina renovation project nears completion, another is about to be launched, at least in its design phase.

Caicos Corporation last week replaced the last of at least 170 creosote-treated pilings at Hudson Point Marina, the scene of a $4 million marina renovation project since October.

“As we close Hudson Point out, Boat Haven planning is ramping up,” Port Executive Director Larry Crockett said Friday.

Like the Hudson Point Marina project, at least two years of planning and securing permits will be required before any pilings can be replaced at Port Townsend Boat Haven Marina.

The port official does not expect to see work on the Boat Haven until fall 2009.

The first order of business was enlisting an advisory committee of representatives who use the marina’s commercial docks and recreational AB docks.

They include those in the commercial fishing industry, the marine trades, recreational users and the Coast Guard, which docks the 87-foot Coast Guard cutter Osprey at the Boat Haven.

Crockett said that, like the Hudson Point Marina renovation, the Boat Haven will meet accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Other issues that the public advisory committee will have to address will be public access and replacing all creosote pilings and rotting wood.

He said the group will also have to weigh in on whether to use concrete, wood or composite material docks.

In addition to all new power and water plumbing, the docks will require a mix of boat slips.

“We have to look at a market that is leaning toward larger slips,” Crockett said.

The marina’s fuel dock also will be examined for issues such as making it accessible from both sides for business times.

Other upland projects, such as paving the dirt lot near the AB docks, will also be discussed, he said.

“Everybody is welcome to send us an e-mail or give us a call or write us a letter with their comments,” Crockett said.
