SEKIU — Repairs on the aging runway at the Sekiu Airport will be finished Saturday when Blackline Inc. makes the final touches.
The Port of Port Angeles commissioners Monday heard an update on the repairs.
The runway fixup would have been finished last weekend, airports and marinas manager Jeff Robb said at the meeting, but Blackline had underestimated the amount of supplies needed.
“The open grade surface of the runway absorbed about 20 percent more of the materials than they had estimated,” Robb said.
Because of the need to bring more materials, the repairs will be finished on Saturday.
The cost of the delay will be born by the contractor because it was a materials shortage problem, Robb said.
The runway was full of cracks and weeds before the company started on the project, Robb said.
“I think we’ll get a good 10 years of use out of this if we stay up with the repairs,” he said.
“The main thing is to stay up with the yearly maintenance.
“The weeds are the most important thing because once they start growing through [and] start displacing the runway.”
