SEKIU — About 40 anti-whaling demonstrators shook signs and shouted and waved at motorists on Saturday.
A lone Makah tribal member, Sonny Turner, turned out to support the tribe’s right to hunt whales.
“Eat More Whale Meat,” his sign said.
“This is not a protest against the Makah people, it is a protest against U.S. policy and whaling in general,” said Dan Spomer of Sekiu, one of the leaders of the demonstration just off state Highway 112 at Sekiu Rock, 13 miles east of the Makah reservation.
The protest was organized after announcements that Makah tribal crews are preparing to once again hunt gray whales.
